Hey everyone,

The Write the Docs team is now emerging from the post-conference
recovery period, and we wanted to send out a quick message to thank
everyone for helping to make our conference such a
success. We appreciate everyone who makes the conference possible:
speakers, sponsors, organizers, and attendees alike.

Conference recap

At 700 attendees this conference was our biggest yet! We had
the usual mix of talks on the main stage along with Q&A,
lightning talks, unconference sessions,
writing sprints, social event, and job fair.
We thought everything went pretty smoothly this year,
including experiments like the new social event platform.

Overall, we were excited with how our awesome community come together in our new venue.
Lots of knowledge was shared, and we had a great time.

Code of Conduct transparency report

As with any Write the Docs event,
this conference was covered by our community Code of Conduct.
We aim to be as transparent with CoC incidents and enforcement as we can.

To ensure that our CoC was visible and accessible, we took a number of specific steps:

Every participant agreed to the Code of Conduct in advance during registration.

The CoC, or a summary, was included on the conference website and Hopin Reception

The CoC was repeatedly mentioned in our conference introduction and announcements.

We specifically stressed that the CoC applies to all conference spaces including the social event.

We encouraged all attendees to report any incident, even if they were not sure whether it was a violation.

None of our organizers were approached about any CoC concerns at this event.
We know that this is, in part, a reflection of the thoughtful and inclusive community that we’re so lucky to have.

That being said, we’re also very conscious of the fact that just because
nothing was reported doesn’t mean nothing happened. If there was any personal
conduct or other aspect of the conference experience that did not meet the
expectations of behavior set out in the CoC, please email us at
conduct@writethedocs.org.

Our Slack network has expanded yet again this year.
All our events and activities

Lightning Talks. We’ll have lightning talks each day after lunch. Sign-up for lightning talks will be posted on Monday and Tuesday morning, and the selected talks will be announced before the lunch break on each day..

Unconference. We’ll be running the Unconference all day Monday and on Tuesday afternoon. Want to chat with like-minded folks about a specific thing? This is the place.

Job Fair. As with the previous few years, on Tuesday morning we’ll have a job fair where you can find your next documentarian friendly job.

Social event. On Monday night the main stage will be closed, and we will switch to social mode! We will be using a spatial chat platform for the social event this year, and we will post the link for the social space during the day on Monday. It will be much closer to a “real life” social where attendees can move between different rooms and group conversations, and the Pac-Man Rule even works!

Conference Help Desk. If you have any questions about navigating the virtual event, we’ll be running the Write the Docs Helpdesk booth, where you can chat with one of the organizers and the Welcome Wagon team.

Hey everyone!

We’re just over a month away from the online Portland conference, and we’re working hard to make sure it’ll be as welcoming and as fun as the in-person event you’re probably familiar with.

Today we’re announcing the full presentation schedule and the platform we’ll be hosting the conference on.
We are working on last-minute details for a few more activities during the conference, so look out for more information in our next mailing.

Conference platform

Following the success of last year’s virtual format, the conference will again be held on https://hopin.to/. Hopin not only provides a stage for our amazing speakers, but also has integrated chat, unconference rooms with breakout calls, and expo booths. We’re updating our Welcome Wagon guide, to be released soon, so it’ll all feel familiar before you’ve even arrived.

Full presentation schedule

The conference website is now updated with the talk schedule for the main stage presentations, so you can start planning your time (and getting excited!) for the conference. We’re excited to continue the new tradition of live Q&A after most talks, which will come from your questions but be moderated by our MC.

One of the big changes in the schedule based on the community feedback is scheduling more breaks during the day. We are all trying to balance our screen time, so we wanted to make sure that your eyes get their rest! We hope that this adjustment will help you stay alert and happy throughout the conferences.

Another change that we made is to move the social event to an earlier time. We want you to have fun socializing with your fellow documentarians, but we understand that your family and home time is also important these days, so hopefully this will help us stay engaged and enjoy the social activities even more.

All talk videos will be published on our YouTube channel no later than 1 week after the conference.

The last few weeks have been pretty rough on those of us who are in the US.
Knowing that,
we have made the decision to extend our CFP deadline by a week in order to give you more time to get proposals in.
We’d love to see some new voices in the program this year,
and we hope that prerecorded talks and fewer timezone restrictions makes that possible.

CFP deadline extended to February 1st

Check out the Call for Proposals page for more details about what we are looking for.
Especially if you’ve not been able to attend due to travel logistics, or if you’ve not spoken before we’d love to hear your voice.
The virtual conference format means you can speak from anywhere, though it’s ideal if you can be online and present around your talk slot in Pacific Time.

Submit your talk proposals by February 1st,
If accepted,
we’ll ask you to put together a 30 min talk video by the end of March.
And if you already have an idea but you’re having a hard time getting your proposal to come together,
you can always ask for feedback on the Write the Docs Slack.
The community is there to help!

We’ll be reviewing all the talk proposals next month, and will be contacting everyone who submitted a proposal by February 15, 2021.
